If you are travelling to Vietnam, keep in mind the visa requirements. Submit your visa application well before departure. In the past, you were also able to do so upon arrival in Vietnam, but this possibility no longer exists. The visa requirements on this page apply to tourists and business travellers who are travelling to Vietnam for a stay of up to 90 days.

The online application procedure

If you meet all the requirements mentioned on this page, you can easily apply for your tourist or business Vietnam e-visa with the form on this website. You receive your visa on average within 13 days by email. Urgent applications have an average delivery time of 5 days.

1 | Your passport and nationality

When applying for the e-visa, you need a passport that is valid for at least six more months upon arrival in Vietnam. You can only travel to Vietnam with the passport you used when applying for your visa. Check whether your passport is still valid long enough before applying for your visa. Children also each require their own passport and visa.

Submitting an online visa application is only possible with a standard passport or a diplomatic passport. If you only have an emergency passport, German childrenʼs passport, identity card, or residence permit, you cannot apply for an e-visa. In that case, you first have to apply for a standard passport or make an appointment at the Embassy of Vietnam.

If you have the nationality of a country in the European Union, such as Ireland, you can apply for your visa online. In addition, tourists and business travellers with the nationalities of the United Kingdom and Switzerland can submit their application online. If you have a different nationality, check this page whether you are eligible for the online application procedure.

4 | Your personal background

The Vietnam immigration service conducts a background check for all inbound travellers. This is done during the processing of the visa application and again upon arrival. The purpose of this is to keep out travellers who are a possible safety risk for Vietnam and its inhabitants.

In the application form, you have to indicate whether you have been evicted from Vietnam in the past three years. If you have to answer this question with “yes”, you cannot apply for a Vietnam e-visa. In addition, you could be denied entry to the country if you have to answer “yes” to the question whether you have a severe mental condition or a transmittable disease.

A criminal record does not have to be an impediment to travelling to Vietnam. In the application form for the visa, you are not asked about a possible criminal past. However, the Vietnam immigration service can send back travellers if they are suspected of posing a possible risk upon arrival in the country. Even if they possess a valid visa.
