When you think of a safari, you might think of South Africa, Tanzania or Kenya. However, India is also a proper safari destination. Numerous animal species can be spotted in India’s national parks and game reserves. Here you can read about the preparations that need to be made for a safari in the country, such as applying for an Indian visa.

Rich culture and beautiful nature

India is often associated with big cities, hectic traffic and busy temples and markets, but the country also has beautiful landscapes with varied flora and fauna. There are numerous national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in India where you can go on safari. The country’s most visited national parks are Ranthambore National Park and Jim Corbett National Park.

The Big Five of India

What many people do not know is that apart from the famous African Big Five, there is also an Asian Big Five. Opinions are divided on which animals belong to the Big Five of Asia, but the Indian rhinoceros, the Asian lion, the Asian leopard, the Asian elephant and the Bengal tiger are the most frequently mentioned. These five animals are all found in India and can be spotted during a safari. Other animals that live in India include wild water buffaloes, rhesus monkeys, hyenas, bears, jackals, deer and crocodiles.

Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park is located in the east of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Ranthambore can be reached by car or train (much cheaper!) from Jaipur in around 4 hours. From New Delhi, it takes around 7 to 8 hours. This national park covers an area of no less than 400 km² (if the the associated Tiger Reserve Area is included, the surface is 1,334 km²). The national park has a varied landscape with rocks, lakes, grasslands, rolling hills and forests.

For many people, the most important reason for visiting this national park is the large population of tigers that live there. In 2020, experts estimate that there are about 60 Bengal tigers in the park. Apart from Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears and axe deer can also be spotted. The national park is also known for its more than 300 species of birds.

Do you want to admire not only the Bengal tiger and the Asian leopard, but also the rest of Asia’s Big Five? Then there are other parks and wildlife sanctuaries in India that you can visit, such as Jim Corbett National Park. The e-visa India that you can apply for on this website is valid for one year. This visa allows you to stay in India for up to 90 consecutive days. This gives you more than enough time to visit several national parks in the country.

Jim Corbett National Park

Another popular national park in India is Jim Corbett National Park, named after the British hunter and writer who hunted man-eating tigers. It is the oldest national park and the first tiger reserve in India and covers an area of more than 500 km². Jim Corbett established the national park, then called Hailey National Park, in 1936. It is located in the state of Uttarakhand, in the foothills of the Himalayas, about 200 kilometres north-west of New Delhi. The national park can be reached from the capital city in about 5 hours by car or train.

Jim Corbett National Park is home to Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, leopards, crocodiles, jackals and monkeys, among other animals. Although there are an estimated 164 Bengal tigers in the park, you have to be lucky to actually encounter one during a safari. Nevertheless, the national park with its breathtaking rivers and grasslands is definitely worth a visit, even without spotting a tiger.

Indian visa online application

To enjoy a safari in India, you need a visa. Most British and Irish tourists meet the requirements for the e-visa and can easily submit their application online. One of these requirements is that you can only arrive at a limited number of ports and airports in India. The nearest airports to Jim Corbett National Park where you can arrive with an e-visa are Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport) and Chandigarh International Airport. Travellers wanting to visit Ranthambore National Park should fly to Jaipur.

After filling in the application form, paying the visa fee and providing the required documents, the application will be processed. On average, visas for India are granted after one week. Are you planning to travel to India soon and have you not yet applied for a visa? Then submit an urgent application. Urgent applications are generally approved within 3 working days.
