Nairobi is a diverse city that attracts tourists from all over the world. Not only because of the many safaris and wildlife, but visitors can also enjoy a wide range of activities here. From shopping at markets and malls to visiting beautiful parks, pristine forests and a vibrant nightlife. In this article, you can read more about the five unique places to visit in Nairobi and how to apply for a Kenya visa.

Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC)

Walking through the streets of Nairobi is an unforgettable adventure in itself, but a 360-degree view of the entire city from the top of the Kenyatta International Convention Center is an experience you cannot afford to miss. This 28-storey building is the sixth-tallest building in Kenya and is located in the heart of Nairobiʼs Central Business District (the CBD). For a small fee, you can climb to the top of Nairobiʼs tallest building in a few minutes for a panoramic view of the entire city.

Giraffe Centre

If you are passionate about African wildlife, you definitely need to visit the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi. This park is managed by a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of one of the worldʼs most endangered giraffe species, the Rothschild giraffe. The Giraffe Centre is located in Langʼata, just off the city centre. When visiting the park, you can take the opportunity to hand-feed these mighty animals and see them up close. As there are very few of these animals living in the wild, the direct contact you can have with the giraffes in this park is certainly something special. Furthermore, the park has a teahouse where you can relax with a view of the magnificent animals that live in this park.

Karura Forest

Nairobiʼs extraordinary and vibrant city centre offers many activities for you to enjoy. If you ever need a break from the exciting centre of the capital, you can retreat to the nature of Karura Forest. This vast green area is located in the north of Nairobi, not far from the city centre. You can choose to go for a walk through nature here or to take part in one of the activities that are offered here, such as mountain biking and horse riding. During your walk in this peaceful and serene area, you are likely to encounter some of the indigenous species that live in this forest. It is home to several species of antelope, such as the dik-dik, as well as porcupines, galagos, and many species of monkeys.

If you are looking for a glimpse of life on the outskirts of the capital, you may want to visit the slums. The largest slum in both Kenya and Africa is Kibera, which lies just outside Nairobi. By visiting this district, you can get an idea of the extreme poverty some people have to live in. Many tourists are sceptical about visiting the slums, but there are tours led by people who have lived most of their lives in Kibera and want to show visitors this side of the city too. With the help of a guide, you can visit this area without having to worry about your safety. You can even shop in local boutiques to support the local people.

Masai markets

If you are looking for a souvenir from your trip to Kenya, this is the place to be. These open-air markets are held every day (except Mondays) at a different location in the city. They offer a wide selection of handmade items. They usually include clothes, jewellery, prints, and souvenirs made from traditional materials, such as wood carvings. The fabrics used to make many of these items create an explosion of colours in the markets that are sure to catch the attention of visitors. Bargaining is part of the experience. Vendors often try to extort as much money as possible from tourists and often start with high prices. So do not hesitate to offer a price that you think is more in line with the souvenir you intend to buy.

Apply for a Kenya visa

For a visit to Nairobi, you need a Kenya visa. As of 2021 it is no longer possible to get a Kenya visa “on arrival”. That means you will have to apply for your visa online. You can apply for your Kenya visa online with the visa application form. The procedure to apply for a visa is straightforward, and the costs are relatively low. You do not need to visit the embassy to apply for your travel permit to Kenya.
