When people think of Kenya, they think of the Big Five rather than of golf. Yet there are more than 40 beautiful golf courses in Kenya, so you can also practice your hobby during your trip to Kenya. If you want to combine a safari and golf during your holiday in Kenya, you need a Kenya visa.
Pleasant golf climate
It is always nice and warm in the countries in East Africa, so you do not have to take into account the weather during a certain period of the year when visiting. Despite the fact that the golf courses are not always of good quality due to periods of drought, golf has become a popular sport in these countries and more and more golf courses are being added.
Kenya is also very dry, except along the coast. The climate in the south-west of the country is temperate, with an average maximum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius in the summer. In the other parts of the country it can get quite hot as the day progresses. The best time to play golf is therefore in the morning, late afternoon or early evening.
Kenya has something to offer every golf enthusiast
Of the African countries around the equator, Kenya, which has a predominantly tropical climate, is the driest. Nevertheless, Kenya is one of the few East African countries with many golf courses of good quality. The first golf courses were built by the English during the time of colonisation. Nowadays, golf lovers in Kenya can enjoy themselves on the many well-maintained and accessible golf courses. Apart from being in the midst of beautiful nature during a game of golf in Kenya, you also have a good chance of spotting a zebra, giraffe or antelope.
On the coast of Kenya, there are only a few well-maintained golf courses, of which the courses of Vipingo Ridge are the most famous. The largest number of golf courses can be found in the capital Nairobi and its surroundings. Every year, the worldʼs best golfers travel to Kenyaʼs largest city to participate in the Kenya Open. This tournament normally takes place on the 18-hole course of the Muthaiga Golf Club, also called ‘The Home of Golf’. Occasionally, the tournament is also organised by the Karen Country Club. This golf course is named after Karen Blixen, the author of ‘A Song of Africa’ (filmed under the title ‘Out of Africa’), because it was built on her old coffee plantation. Kenya also has golf courses that are at an altitude of 1,500 metres or higher, such as the Limuru Country Club. The air is thinner at this altitude, so the golf ball travels a greater distance (+10%).
