Numerous flights have been cancelled in the last few days due to the war that has recently broken out in the Middle East. Thousands of travellers have been left stranded or are unable to fly. For this reason, Indonesia and other countries have temporarily adjusted their visa policies.

What measures has Indonesia taken?

As a result of the war in the Middle East, a great number of international flights have been cancelled and more than 2,200 travellers have been left stranded in Indonesia. On 1 March 2026, the Indonesian government issued an official statement and took a series of measures in response to the situation.

The authorities have introduced an emergency visa with a validity of 30 days, which can be extended if necessary. In addition, the fine for staying in the country without a visa will be abolished for travellers who are stranded due to the war in the Middle East. Travellers must, however, provide a proof of this from their airline or the port authority.

How are other countries responding to the crisis?

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs advises travellers who are stranded in India to contact a Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). Here, travellers can receive advice and have their visas extended.

Sri Lanka has announced that all tourists who are currently in the country will be granted a free 14-day visa extension. The government hopes this will provide travellers with legal protection. Without this measure, many tourists would exceed the duration of their visas, as it is not possible for them to leave on time. In addition, the government is working with airlines to find alternative routes and bring tourists home safely. Stranded travellers in Sri Lanka must also be repatriated via alternative routes. Furthermore, helplines are available 24 hours a day.

The Maldives has also decided to extend the validity period of tourist visas. Travellers currently stranded in the Maldives are advised to cont-act the immigration authorities.

Are you stuck at your destination?

If your flight has been cancelled due to the war in the Middle East and you are stranded at your destination, you'd better contact the immigration authorities there. The immigration authorities can help you extend your visa and answer any questions you may have.

Apply for a visa for Indonesia

The war in the Middle East is having an indirect impact on flights between Europe and Indonesia, as many routes involve a stopover in the United Arab Emirates. It is expected that air traffic between Europe and Indonesia will resume in the coming days, possibly via an alternative route.
