The Indonesian Government has changed the procedure for extending visas. Until recently, both travellers and temporary residents could extend their visas online. However, since 29 May 2025, travellers need to make an appointment with the Indonesian immigration services for this.

The new procedure concerns travellers and temporary residents.

The new visa-extension requirements affect holders of a temporary residence permit (ITAS/KITAS), a temporary visa (ITK), or travellers with an e-VoA or VoA. From 26 January 2023, it was possible to apply for an extension online. However, this option was removed in May 2025. Since then, to extend a visa, it is necessary to visit an immigration office in Indonesia.

How does the interview at the immigration office work?

Before going to the immigration office, applicants must submit a series of documents in advance. During the appointment, they will have an interview with an immigration officer and answer a series of questions. In addition, biometric data will be collected, i.e. fingerprints and identity photos. It is important to know which immigration office to go to. This depends on the applicant's place of stay or residence. On the islands of Bali, Java and Lombok, among others, there are different immigration offices where you can apply for a visa extension.

What is the official reason for the rule change?

According to Indonesian authorities, this new procedure for visa extensions responds to the need for greater control over compliance with general visa regulations. Thanks to personal interviews and biometric data collection, the number of infractions should decrease. In general, it is best to pay close attention to the exact deadlines for visa extensions. This can prevent numerous problems.

The online visa for short stays
