The Australia tourist visa comes in different types. Here, you can see which type is needed for your particular trip, and how it can be applied for. In most cases the eVisitor suffices, which can be acquired quickly and easily online through this website.
Australia tourist visa or a different type?
Australia has an extensive visa system. Which Australia tourist visa is required depends on several things, namely:
- The nationality of the traveller
- The purpose of the trip (purely for tourism, or combined with a study or (volunteer) work)
- The desired duration of stay in Australia
- The potential criminal history of the traveller
Which types of Australia tourist visa can I choose from?
Most tourists that apply for an Australia tourist visa use the eVisitor variant. But there are also a number of different, commonly used types. Below follows a quick overview:
eVisitor (type 651)
This Australia tourist visa costs £14.95, and can be used both by tourists as well as business travellers. Strictly speaking it is thus not purely a tourist visa, but a general travel authorisation which suffices for most travellers. The most important condition which the Australian government sets for travellers with an eVisitor is that they do not remain in Australia for a period longer than 3 months. Likewise, travellers are not allowed to perform paid work while in Australia. This visa is valid for 12 months, and can be used for an unlimited number of trips to Australia.

ETA (type 601)
This Australia tourist visa is similar to the eVisitor with regards to its validity duration and the terms set by the Australian government. The benefit of the ETA is that it is available for travellers from more nationalities than the eVisitor. The downside is that the application process is more expensive (approximately £80,00). The ETA is thus only recommended for travellers that do not qualify for the eVisitor. The ETA cannot be acquired through this website.
Working Holiday Visa (type 417)
This Australia tourist visa is popular with backpackers aged 18 to 31 (there is a hard age restriction). For Canadian and Irish citizens, the age cap is 36 years instead of 31. With this variant, a traveller can stay in Australia for up to 12 months, and is also allowed to work for Australian companies. It is the most expensive tourist visa (approximately €277,00), has a more complex application procedure, and comes with several important terms and conditions. Visitor visa (type 600)
This type of Australia tourist visa is less popular than the eVisitor variant. This is because the type 600 is more expensive (approximately £241,00), and the application process takes at least three weeks. The primary reason to choose for this visa type is the possibility to stay in Australia for longer than 3 consecutive months (maximum of 12 months).
Holidays lasting less than 3 months
As mentioned above, the eVisitor is the most popular tourist visa with travellers that qualify for this visa type.
