Visa for Vietnam application
The Vietnam visa replaces the old visa on arrival
Starting 2018, you can apply for the Vietnam visa entirely online, for a total cost of £49,95. By doing this, you avoid the cost of the stamping fee ($25 tot $50) and the waiting line for the former Vietnam visa on arrival.
Important announcement regarding Corona / COVID-19: The visa for Vietnam can still be applied for online with this application form. However, all new applications will only be processed once the Vietnamese government decides that the health risks have sufficiently lowered. It is not clear when this will be, but keep in mind that this will take at least several more weeks.
Visa applications that were submitted before or on 13 March 2020 and are still pending will likely only be issued after several weeks. The immigration service cannot offer any certainties at this moment. European travellers that already possess a visa for Vietnam are strongly advised against travelling to the country. Individuals that do this regardless might be sent back immediately after arriving, or held in quarantine for at least 14 days in local hospitals that can be very unhygienic. As it will most likely not be possible to recover the costs it is advised to not make any more costs for a trip to Vietnam on the short term.

Make use of the new digital Vietnam visa
On 1 February 2017, Vietnam introduced an electronic e-visa to slowly phase out the old visa on arrival. Unlike the Vietnam visa on arrival, the e-visa is granted before departure. Travelers can thus avoid the waiting line for payment of the stamping fee. All costs are included in the total price of £49,95 per person. The e-visa is cheaper, easier to apply for, and saves a lot of time at the airport compared to the old visa on arrival.
What is the Vietnam visa? The visa for Vietnam is a travel authorization for traveling to and entering Vietnam. All travelers are required to possess their own visa; this includes children. Vietnam allows citizens from certain countries, including the UK (British citizens only), to stay in Vietnam for 15 days without a visa. However, if you plan on staying longer than 15 days, you will require a visa. Submitting an online application is the easiest way to meet this requirement. After approval, the visa will be sent to you digitally by e-mail; you only need to print it and take it with you on your trip for a comfortable journey to Vietnam.
Warning Vietnam Visa on Arrival
The Vietnam embassy warns: do not make use of the visa on arrival. Many travel bureaus still advertise the visa on arrival, even though the embassy strongly discourages this method. The visa on arrival was until last year the most used method to travel to this country. To do this, an approval letter had to be bought before departure for roughly €20 and another stamping fee of $25 to 50 had to be paid at the airport in Vietnam. The embassy can no longer guarantee that travelers with the visa on arrival can get past the passport check without trouble.
Take note: many travel bureaus claim to be able to arrange a Vietnamese visa for you, even though they can only arrange an approval letter for the visa on arrival. You still need to wait in line and pay extra costs after arrival in Vietnam. That’s why it’s better to make use of the visa for Vietnam on this website.
Validity term and Vietnam visa requirements
To be able to travel to Vietnam, you need to keep a number of requirements in mind. During the application process you indicate when the visa will be valid. An exact date of arrival or departure date is not necessary yet. You also don’t need to have booked transportation (flight, cruise ship or boat) at this moment. You can travel in and out of Vietnam a single time, and only at the locations which you fill in on the form. Your entire stay in Vietnam (including the day you are traveling in and out of the country) must fall under the validity term of 30 days. You are required to have established at least one place to stay at the moment of your application for the visa. You are also required to meet the requirements below:
- You must possess the Vietnamese visa before starting your journey
- Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days longer than your visa
- You cannot have a mental illness or transmittable disease which can pose a threat to your direct environment
- You cannot have been deported from Vietnam in the past 3 years
- You can only arrive and depart from one of these airports, seaports, or border posts
