Cambodia will be opening locations where the Cambodia visa is accepted at several places in the country. These locations will be opened in order to receive more tourists who travel to the country with a Cambodia e-visa.

The visa can be easily applied for online, and this should make it easier to travel to Cambodia. British and Irish travellers do not need to go to the Cambodian embassy, but can instead apply for the digital travel authorisation.

New locations Cambodia visa

Cambodia has opened two new locations as of December 2017. These are Sihanoukville International Airport in the southwest of the country and Tropaeng Kreal, on the border with Laos.

From 6 December 2017, Sihanoukville International Airport will be a valid entry location for travellers with the e-visa. One week later, on 12 December 2017, Tropaeng Kreal Border Post was added.

Cambodia visa application

Anyone living in the United Kingdom or Ireland who wants to travel to Cambodia needs a visa to do so, as Cambodia is subject to a visa requirement. Children also need to have their own Cambodia visa.

The visa is an electronic travel authorisation issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cambodia. It can be applied for online, so there is no need to go to the embassy. The Cambodia visa is intended for travellers who want to stay in the country for less than 30 days.

Requirements to apply for the Cambodia visa

To apply for the visa Cambodia, a number of things are required. Firstly, you have to make a scan of your passport. Only the passport is valid as legal identification, so one cannot travel to Cambodia with an identity card or driving license. Besides a scan of the passport, you also need to upload a passport photo.

Furthermore, on the application form you will be asked for the passport details, make sure that these are written down correctly. A small typing error can already make the visa for Cambodia invalid. The application form also asks for the arrival location, as you are only allowed to enter Cambodia through a number of arrival locations.

Entry locations in Cambodia

There are only seven locations in Cambodia where international travellers can arrive. Firstly, you can arrive at the following international airports: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville (Preah Sihanouk). In addition, you can arrive at two border locations near Thailand: Cham Yeam and Poi Pet. Finally, Bavet (Svay Rieng, the border location near Vietnam) and Tropaeng Kreal (Stung Treng, the border location near Laos) are also possible as arrival locations. One of these locations must be mentioned in the visa application.

Cambodia visa requirements

It is possible to apply for a Cambodia visa for several people at the same time. Firstly, the applicant fills in the Cambodia visa form, and then the payment for the visa has to be made. Applying for a Cambodia visa costs £64.95 per persoon. The visa is not only mandatory for adult travellers, but children also need to have their own visa. The application can be completed by paying with Visa, MasterCard, American Express or PayPal.

After making the payment you will be asked to upload a passport photo and a passport scan. Virtually all file formats and sizes are accepted. All applications are checked manually, so it may take a while until the application is approved. The advantage of this, however, is that a visa expert will contact the applicant if it is suspected that the application has been filled in incorrectly or incompletely. Not all input errors can be detected, so it remains necessary to correctly write down and check the information yourself.

A Cambodia visa application can be submitted at any time, except if the traveller is already in Cambodia. The application can be processed up to 30 days before departure, but it can be submitted earlier. In that case, the application remains "on hold" until 30 days before departure, because the validity period starts immediately after approval. In this way, the visa is valid approximately 30 days before the arrival date, up to 60 days after arrival. The visa therefore has a maximum validity of 90 days.
