The Vietnamese authorities have introduced three new visa programmes for travellers wishing to stay in Vietnam for an extended period of time. The country is particularly targeting investors and highly skilled professionals, including digital nomads. The new visas will have a validity period of 5 to 10 years. There is also the possibility of extending the validity period.

A boost for Vietnam's economy

Vietnam is trying to position itself as an attractive destination for foreign investors, entrepreneurs and professionals. The creation of three new visa types is in line with Vietnam's broader strategy to boost the country's economic growth by attracting foreign investments. The Investor Visa, Golden Visa and Talent Visa addres different target groups. On the one hand, investors and wealthy individuals, but also digital nomads and highly-skilled professionals with expertise in certain fields.

Three new visa types

The Vietnamese authorities plan to introduce the new visa categories indicated below. It will probably be possible to apply for these visas entirely online. Aside from the validity period, there is not much known yet about the new visas. It has not yet been announced who will be eligible. It is also still unclear what kind of investment is necessary to apply for an Investor Visa or a Golden Visa.

The new visa categories:

  • Investor Visa: this visa is adressed to individuals who invest a important amount of money in Vietnam, and has a validity of 10 years. After 5 years, it will be easier for holders of this visa to obtain a permanent residence permit in Vietnam.
  • Golden Visa: this visa will become available for individuals who want to stay in Vietnam for a long term and are willing to contribute to the Vietnamese economy. This visa will be valid for a period between five and 10 years, with the possibility of extending the validity period.
  • Talent Visa: this visa targets highly skilled professionals in some high-growth sectors. The visa will be valid for 5 years, with a simple renewal procedure.

Current visas for investors

Currently, Vietnamese authorities already offer several types of visas for investors: the DT1, DT2, DT3 and DT4 visa. Depending on the type of DT visa, applicants must make an economic contribution ranging from 100 million Vietnamese dong (about EUR 3,400) for the DT4 visa to 20 billion Vietnamese dong (about EUR 680,000) for the DT1 visa.

It is not yet known the amount of the contribution which will permit to obtain the Investor Visa and the Golden Visa The Vietnamese government has also not yet announced whether if the new visas will replace or complete the four variants of the DT visa.
